The Shoemaker Lady Grey Wolves knew during pregame warm-ups that they were in for a tall order against the Round Rock Cedar Ridge Lady Raiders.

But on Tuesday the only thing that climbed higher than Cedar Ridge’s state ranking is the deficit Shoemaker faced after eight minutes.

Jicara Quinn scored 10 points, but Shoemaker fell to Cedar Ridge 71-36 at home on Tuesday.

“They knew Cedar Ridge was a good team coming in, but I think they psyched themselves out and really took themselves out of the game before it ever started,” Shoemaker coach Lori Shead said.

Cedar Ridge came into the game as the 12th-ranked team in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll and showed that form early on.

The Lady Raiders put the Lady Grey Wolves in a 21-3 hole after the opening eight minutes of the game as Hannah Jones’ bucket was the only field goal Shoemaker (1-8) had in the opening frame.

“We just knew they were a good team and we weren’t exactly prepared,” Quinn said. “Eventually we figured out what they were doing.”

The Shoemaker offense managed to get 13 points in the second quarter, but by halftime the Lady Raiders had a comfortable 45-16 lead.

“I tried to make sure tonight that I found something positive in every single thing they did,” Shead said. The struggles continued for the Lady Wolves after the break as Shoemaker’s offense turned the ball over four times in its first six possessions.

Mikayla Koester’s jumper opened the Shoemaker scoring 1:11 into the second half and cut the Lady Raider lead to 49-18, but that was the closest Shoemaker got to Cedar Ridge.

Shoemaker shot 45 percent (9 of 20) from the field in the second half and turned the ball over eight times.

Koester scored six points while junior forward Kaitlyn Brown had all six of her points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Grey Wolves look to rebound on Tuesday against Bryan.
