Tricia Williams established herself as an elite athlete in 2013, but she is not satisfied.

After sweeping the Class 1A-Division II throwing events at the UIL State Track & Field Championships and placing third at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet, the senior finds it hard to believe she achieved so much so young.

“I think it is pretty crazy,” Williams said of her accomplishments.

Williams won a pair of gold medals at state in the discus and shot put as a junior, producing a 1A-DII conference record throw of 131-7 in the discus to defend her state championship, while also winning the shot put with a distance of 42-10¼. As a sophomore, Williams placed third in the shot put (38-6¼).

“She is very dedicated and hard working, always wanting to improve at any level,” said Tim Williams, Lometa’s head powerlifting and assistant track coach.

With the state powerlifting meet approaching in mid-March, Tricia Williams is already eying the first goal for her senior year — increasing her workout intensity.

“It is fun,” she said. “I mainly do that for track, but it is fun doing powerlifting and track.”

Williams finished third in her weight class at the state powerlifting meet, totaling 1,030 pounds between the squat, bench press and deadlift events. “I set the bench-press record of 265 pounds, but (I want) to go for 320.”

She also hopes to set new national benchmarks in the discus and shot put, but winning gold at the state powerlifting meet is her main focus.

“Beating those marks are some of my goals,” Williams said. “But I want to try and get first in powerlifting, because the last two years I’ve finished third. Accomplishing all of those would be really awesome.”
