The Shoemaker Grey Wolves were able to climb out of two deficits at two different points against Waco University on Thursday.

But a third time proved too much.

Despite getting RBIs from Jose Casillas and Alex Bartz, the Grey Wolves fell to University 5-3 during the first night of the Killeen ISD Tournament.

“That’s probably the worse way to lose when you have chances to win and you can’t get over the hump,” Shoemaker head coach Harry Zambrana said.

The Grey Wolves ended the tournament’s opening day by splitting games against teams from Waco. They beat Waco High 6-4 earlier in the day.

In the nightcap, Shoemaker leadoff hitter Raven Sauceda had one hit and scored one run. Wade Corn was 2 for 4 with a run scored while Zachary Jacobs went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Shoemaker fell behind 1-0 after a half an inning before Alex Bartz brought Jacobs in with a groundout to short that tied the game at a run apiece.

“I just like how we’re trying to come back at the end, but when you try too hard, things sometimes don’t go right,” Sauceda said.

After University got two in the top of the third, Casillas tied the game with a sac fly to left in the bottom of the fifth and Corn tied the game at 3 after scoring when Broderick Reed reached on an error.

Shoemaker’s offense went quiet the rest of the night. Corn was the only one of the last seven batters to get on base after reaching on a single in the top of the seventh.

University took the lead after bringing home a pair of runs on three consecutive passed balls. Three University batters reached on a hit after the Grey Wolves got the first two outs in the top of the seventh.

“It’s kind of tough because the little mental errors is how you lose ball games,” Sauceda said.

Shoemaker starter Brenden Graves allowed three runs and struck out four batters in six innings of work.

Early win

Earlier in the day, the Grey Wolves put up a run in the fifth and sixth innings to beat Waco 6-4. Waco tied the game at 4 with a three-run top of the fourth inning.

Reed led the Shoemaker offense with three hits and Shoemaker got RBIs from both Corn and Tommie Flores.

The Grey Wolves continue tournament play today against Rockdale at 1:30 p.m. and Austin at 4 p.m.

“Austin and Rockdale are going to give us a great test,” Zambrana said. “We’re going to find out how good we really are. They’re going to have some great pitching. If we don’t hit the ball well and we don’t execute what I call, it’s going to be a long two games.”
