With three easy victories, Copperas Cove took one big leap toward returning home as the Austin ISD Invitational champions.

The Lady Bulldawgs kept their perfect record intact, advancing from pool play into the tournament’s gold bracket with wins against Poth, San Antonio Lee and Fredericksburg on Friday.

Three victories now separate Copperas Cove from the title, beginning with a 9 a.m. match against Hutto today. Should the Lady Bulldawgs advance, they would play Austin Bowie at 10 a.m. on its home floor. The championship match is set to begin at noon.

Copperas Cove won all three of its matches on Friday by at least eight points, opening with a 25-15, 25-12 over Poth. Senior middle blocker Qiana Canete lead the team with 11 kills, while teammates Bryaunea Hall and Mikayla Blount added six and three, respectively. Sophomore setter Blount also contributed a dozen assists, three digs, three aces and three blocks in the win.

The Lady Bulldawgs (9-0) followed up the performance with a 25-17, 25-7 win against Lee before beating Fredericksburg 25-14, 25-13.

Canete posted team-highs in kills in each match, finishing with 13 against Lee and nine against Fredericksburg. Junior defensive specialist Lily Drever had a big day, totaling 39 digs in the three wins, including a 18-dig outburst against Lee.

Killeen, Shoemaker to face off in bracket game: Killeen and Shoemaker each won two of three matches on the second day of pool-play games at the Austin ISD Invitational and will play each other today in a first-round bronze-bracket match at 9 a.m.

Killeen (4-3) beat Austin Travis 25-8, 25-15 and Austin Lanier 25-8, 25-11 before losing its final match of the day 25-11, 25-15 to Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders 25-11, 25-15.

Shoemaker (3-4) won its third straight match before losing to Kyle Lehman 25-13, 25-20 in its final match Thursday. The Lady Grey Wolves, whose first win of the season was their third match Wednesday, beat Austin Eastside Memorial 25-4, 25-9 and Austin LBJ 26-24, 17-25, 25-15.

The Killeen-Shoemaker winner plays Austin Akins at 10 a.m. in a bracket semifinal; the loser is eliminated.
