LAMPASAS — After dropping the first two sets, the Llano Lady Jackets fought back for a 14-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-12 District 8-3A victory against Lampasas on Tuesday.

“Fatigue was a factor, and that was my fault,” said Lampasas coach Keisha Davis. “It won’t happen again.”

“Lampasas fought hard the whole game,” said Llano coach John Black. “They never gave up. They played a good, hard game, and their back line was digging everything at the end there.”

Llano saw its offense rise dramatically after the second set.

“We had a combined 11 kills in the first two sets,” said Black. “In the third, we had 14, and in the fourth, 13. Our hitters really settled in and started getting on.”

Among those hitters was senior Amanda Morgan, who played a stellar game for the Lady Jackets.

“After that second game, we were really motivated to play better,” said Morgan. “We thought about wanting to make the playoffs again. That’s our motivation for this year. We talked more, we communicated better, and we had to. Lampasas played great. They stepped up from last year for sure.”

“We lost the momentum,” said Davis. “You can’t do that in volleyball.”

“I don’t want to take anything away from Lampasas,” said Black. “They made us work for this one. This was not an easy win.”

Kara Gillis led Lampasas with 10 kills. Nola Bishop had 13 assists, and Marisa Maldonado had 21 digs.

The first set was dominated by the Lady Badgers, with Lampasas scoring nine straight points in the middle.

Superb serving by junior Blake Webb was the mark of this match, enabling Lampasas to run out to an early 16-9 lead. The set was marked by another six-point run with serves from junior Gillis to help the Lady Badgers cap and easy 25-14 win

The second set saw more of the same from Lampasas, with the Lady Badgers smartly being in position, no matter how badly a play broke down. At one point, ahead 21-14, Llano stormed back behind the serves of Morgan to tie the set at 21-21. Lampasas was able to capitalize on Llano mistakes, however, and the late surge wasn’t enough as Lampasas won the set 25-22

The third set saw a resurgent Llano score seven straight points behind the strong serves of Morgan, and Llano capitalized on some late Lampasas mistakes to eke out the win in the third set, 25-23.

The fourth set saw more dominance from Llano, as it easily beat the Lady Badgers 25-17. Llano ran away at the end of the set, scoring seven straight behind the strong serves of Morgan to go up 24-16 before closing out Lampasas.

“After the fourth set, I told the team that they didn’t work this hard to go home losing,” said Black. “We needed to go out there and finish this.”

And finish they did. The finale saw Llano storm out to an early 7-1 lead, and despite the best efforts of the Lady Badgers, Llano held on to win the set and the match.
