Football - which begins Monday - may be the unofficial start to the school year, but volleyball is already under way.

Copperas Cove began workouts Monday and plays its season opener at home Monday against Liberty Hill (6:30 p.m.).

The Lady Dawgs hosted an ice cream social Thursday, making their first appearance for the 2010 season.

The team includes four returners from last season's 33-win campaign, including junior Amy Rosenbaum, the 2009 District 12-5A's Most Valuable Setter. Also back are first-team pick Phyllicia Cross, along with fellow seniors Kenya Williams and Alex Chace, both honorable mention selections.

Other seniors for Cove are Mari Chavez, Tiffany Williams and Ana Zigler. Juniors are Andrea Hurt and Claire Taylor, while sophomores Arielle Garcia and Carlie Tuiasosopo round out the Lady Dawgs.

Cove will host a scrimmage Saturday with Waco Midway, Marble Falls, Killeen High and Salado. Matches begin at 9 a.m.

Following Monday's opener, Cove goes to Round Rock on Tuesday before hosting its own tournament next weekend. The Lady Dawgs won the tournament in its inaugural year, as they went through unbeaten and did not drop a single game in seven matches.

Booster club memberships available

Memberships are now available to the Copperas Cove Bulldawg Quarterback Club, with five different levels ranging from $25 to 500. Each member receives Dawg memorabilia or meal coupons, depending on the level.

The top-level member (Royal Blue), for example, receives 20 Meal Deal coupons, reserved stadium parking, an official Dawgs apparel item or cowbell, an official Dawgs cap and shirt, a listing on the stadium banner or a Dawgs backer appreciation plaque, a team autographed football and a covedawgs.com bumper sticker.

Memberships help support Cove student athletes, with past donations made for training equipment, team banners at Bulldawg Stadium, spirit apparel and advertising.

The Quarterback Club helps sponsor the annual Bulldawg Football Awards Banquet, Project Graduation, Winter/Spring Sports Banquet, CHAMPS Heart of Texas Bowl game and banquet.

Swimming under way

The Copperas Cove swim team - the Aquadawgs - will begin practice Aug. 30.

All interested persons need to make sure their physicals and other necessary paperwork is in order with the trainers by the time school begins.
