BRYAN — It wasn’t the start Temple was hoping for, but at least the Tem-Cats now know what they need to work on.

Temple opened its volleyball season with a pair of road losses Tuesday night, getting swept by Franklin 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 before falling to host Bryan Rudder 25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18.

“It was an inauspicious beginning all the way around,” first-year Tem-Cats coach Tim McDonald said.

In addition to working within the system of a coach who has been on the job only a little more than a couple of weeks, Temple ran into the additional hurdle of injuries Tuesday, when it played much of the night without its top two setters and liberos.

“We pretty much had to shuffle the whole lineup,” McDonald said.

Tiffany Mays tallied six blocks, and Angel Rivera — forced into duty as the setter — posted six kills and seven assists.

“We stepped up some against Rudder, which was a better team than Franklin. That showed me that we’re more capable than what we showed against Franklin,” McDonald said. “We started blocking, digging, passing and swinging like we’re supposed to.

“That will at least make the film session better for the girls, because we’ll have some positive things to talk about.”

Next up for the Tem-Cats is the Round Rock Westwood tournament, which they open at noon Thursday against the host team.

“We’re not despondent,” McDonald said. “We just have some things that we have to work on.”
