A year ago, Florence couldn’t get anyone out and usually had more errors than hits.

They went 0-19.

After the first weekend of the season, the Lady Buffaloes already have won a couple of games and have a title to their credit. Florence defeated Holland 18-1 and Alvarado 11-4 to claim the Bruceville-Eddy consolation championship title Saturday.

Freshman pitcher Mackenzie Futrell led the charge in the win over Holland, collecting three hits, driving in a run and also collecting the win on the mound. Futrell pitched three innings, gave up two hits and struck out two. Freshman Brittany Ramirez was 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the win.

Freshman shortstop Clarissa Carranco was 2-for-3 in both games and had four total RBIs. Junior catcher Samantha Vaughan went a combined 4-for-5 and had two RBIs, and freshman Peyton Thomas was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI. Futrell also pitched against Alvarado, going four innings, giving up five hits and only one earned run.
