Events to honor veterans

Lots of events are planned across Central Texas this weekend to honor service members:

Today

  • A Veterans Day ceremony is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Harker Heights Veterans Monument, 305 Miller’s Crossing. The ceremony will feature guest speaker Lt. Gen. Donald M. Campbell Jr., commander of III Corps and Fort Hood, remarks by Mayor Mike Aycock and the traditional wreath-laying to honor those who gave their lives. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved into the Recreation Center. For more information call, (254) 953-5465.
  • The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System is set to honor veterans with two ceremonies: At 8:30 a.m. today at the Waco VA Medical Center’s Avenue of Flags. In case of inclement weather, ceremony will be in Stracke Auditorium, Building 6. The guest speaker will be U.S. Rep. Bill Flores. At 11 a.m. today at the Temple VA Medical Center’s Avenue of Flags. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be in the Primary Care Clinic lobby, Building 163. The guest speaker will be Brig. Gen. D. J. Milner, Canadian deputy commander of III Corps and Fort Hood. Both events are free and open to the public.

Saturday

  • A Veterans Day 5K Run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, with on-site registration from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Registration is also available online at www.hoodmwr.com. The race will be conducted from Abrams Physical Fitness Center, building 23001 on 62nd Street and Support Avenue. For more information, call (254) 285-5459.
  • The Copperas Cove Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8577, its Ladies Auxiliary and the Junior Girls will celebrate Veterans Day on Saturday with a parade and lunch. The annual Veterans Day Parade will start at 8:30 a.m. from the VFW Post, 1506 Veterans Ave., Copperas Cove. The Parade route will travel down Veterans Avenue to First Street. Then it will go from First to Avenue D before ending up at the Cove Terrace Shopping Center.
  • After the parade, there will be an awards ceremony at the post hall for all entries, and beans and corn bread will be served. At 7 p.m. Sunday, the post will also have a potluck dinner with a Veterans Day ceremony.
  • The Central Texas Community Veterans Day Parade will wind through downtown Killeen beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday. First Cavalry Division Deputy Commanding Gen. Thomas S. James will serve as grand marshal. Spectators should arrive early to avoid traffic and secure a spot. The starting point is College Street and Avenue D, east to north Fourth Street; north on Fourth Street to Avenue B, turn east to north Eighth Street; turn north to Sprout, then west to Gray Street; south on Gray to east Avenue C; west to North Second Street, south to east Avenue C, and finally west on Avenue C to College Street.   • Rudy’s is hosting a free meal for veterans, active-duty and retired, and their families at 2 p.m. Saturday. Rudy’s is at 3307 Zephyr Road in Killeen. For more information, call (254) 680-7575.
  • Central Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Association will have a raffle drawing for a custom-made motorcycle at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kay’s Motorcycle Mania. All proceeds benefit the Central Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Association. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased at 103 S. Main St., Nolanville. Ticket holders do not have to be present to win. Live music with the Red Dirt Ramblers is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rat Ranch will be performing from 2 to 6 p.m. Requested donation at the door is $5. Full bar provided. Do not bring your own bottle.

Sunday

  • Disabled American Veterans chapter commander will play TAPS between 11 a.m. and noon Sunday at the Killeen City Cemetery, Killeen Memorial Cemetery and the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
  • VFW Post 3892 in Harker Heights will have a Veterans Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday. The ceremony will feature guest speaker John Spahr, a former state commander for the VFW, retired firefighter and veteran. A meatloaf dinner will follow.   • Kempner will conduct a Veterans Day Ceremony Sunday with the 36th Engineer Brigade. The ceremony will start at 2 p.m. at Sylvia Tucker Memorial Park off U.S. Highway 190 in Kempner. It will feature patriotic music from the Lampasas High School Band, a keynote speaker from the 36th Engineer Brigade, posting of the colors by the brigade and more.
  • Kempner Veterans of Foreign War Post 3393 will hold an in-house ceremony at its facility, 424 Boys Ranch Road in Kempner, at 4 p.m. Sunday. The ceremony will include discussions on what Veterans Day means and honor any veterans who attend.
  • Sport Clips Haircuts locations nationwide will host its annual Veterans Day Cut-a-Thon on Sunday. Sport Clips will donate $1 per haircut service to “Help A Hero,” which supports the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Operation Uplink, a program that makes free phone calls home available to deployed and hospitalized U.S. service members.

Monday

  • Killeen’s Texas Roadhouse invites veterans including all active duty, retired or former U.S. military service members to enjoy a free lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. Every Texas Roadhouse location across the country will participate in the free lunch event to honor the men and women of our armed forces. Choose one of 10 entrees, including a 6-ounce sirloin and two made-from-scratch sides plus a choice of any Coca-Cola product, sweet tea/ice tea or coffee during lunch. Proof of service includes military or VA card, or discharge papers.
  • American Legion post 573 is planning a Veterans Day celebration Monday. Activities include a veterans’ ceremony with balloon release, horse shoe/pool/dart triathlon, bingo for prizes and food for donations. The post is at 225 Cox Drive in Harker Heights.
