Wine enthusiasts and those interested in learning may sample local and international wines at KNCT’s fifth annual Wine Classic fundraiser Saturday evening.
Twelve local wineries will be set up at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center along with booths representing other U.S. and international winemakers presenting about 180 wines for tasting, said Pat McCray, membership director at KNCT-TV.
“People can compare old world wine to new world wine,” McCray said. “They’ll get an opportunity to taste some wines they’ve never experienced before. Expand their horizons, taste different things. Enjoy wine with other wine enthusiasts.”
For the first time, participants will be able to purchase wine from vendors at the event.
Before the wine tasting begins, a limited-seating Wine 101 class will teach participants the basics of tasting, smelling and pairing wine with food.
“I do recommend Steve Hanik’s class,” said Clint Walker III, co-owner of Dancing Bee Winery in Rogers, who has attended three Wine Classic events. “He’s very discerning, very non-threatening. Anyone that has an extensive knowledge of wine will still learn some things, but he makes it simple enough even a newbie would get the full benefit.”
Walker described the atmosphere of an evening at the Wine Classic as relaxed and enjoyable.
“I’m real confident there’s not another place you can go and be exposed to that many wines. They focus heavily on local wineries,” he said. “There’s no place they can expose their palates to this many wines. ... If you’re interested in Central Texas wineries, it’s the one stop of the year.”
Food will be available at the event and is included with admission.
“It is a fundraising event,” McCray said. “If you would go to individual wineries and do a lot of tastings, you’d probably spend a lot of money, whereas you can visit a lot in one stop here.”
As of Thursday morning, about 25 tickets remained for the Wine 101 class.
Proceeds benefit public broadcasting stations KNCT-TV and 91.3 KNCT-FM. For more information, go to www.knct.org.
