The Central Texas College Continuing Education department wraps up summer fun with a variety of College For Kids classes this month. Classes are directed to youngsters 3 years to high school-age and combine fun and hands-on learning in the studies of science, performing arts, arts and crafts, life skills, languages and more. The August classes include:

Parent and Child Swim (age 6 months to 3 years): This class familiarizes children with the water and prepares them to learn to swim. Parents will learn safety information and techniques to help orient their child to the water. Course also provides direction on how to supervise water activities in and around the water. The class is every Saturday, Aug. 10-31, from noon to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $15.

Weather Phenomena (age 5-12): Join us as we take a trip through the weather phenomena on our planet and others in the solar system. On this journey, students will create their very own Texas tornadoes, see how sunlight affects our earth by using color sensitive paper and do more hands-on activities as they venture through each unique weather system happening on our planet and others. The class meets Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $35.

Galaxy Quest (age 5-12): Learn about the power of our sun, gravity, stars, what lasers really do and much more. Students will explore science through hands-on experiments and will also make a constellation projector, use a solar telescope and a sun spotter. The last day of class will be spent in the Planetarium watching a show. The course price of $65 includes all supplies. The class is Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Alter It! (age 8-11): This new class will stretch the imagination and creativity. Using a variety of materials, students will take an old book and turn it in to a scrapbook, conversation piece or an art masterpiece. Each student will create their own altered book in class. Students are asked to bring along any pictures, trinkets or craft items they would like to use. The class meets Monday through Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. The cost is $29.

I Love Ladybugs! (age 6 and older): Learn all about ladybugs — the cutest beetle on the planet. Students will explore the lifecycle of ladybugs through basic math, literacy and art projects. The class is Monday through Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $39.

Beginning Drawing (age 10 and older): Build confidence while developing an artist’s eye! Students will enhance their observational sensibilities and apply them to their artwork. Class includes the fundamentals of drawing which are composition, proportion, perspective, light and shadow. The class is Aug. 12-13 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. The cost is $29.

Arts & Crafts (age 5 and older): Experiment with new methods of expression in this fun, hands-on class. This project-based course is a great opportunity for getting your child to think outside of her or his creative box. The class meets Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $55.

Animal Heroes (age 5-10): This class is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about animals and make a difference in their lives. Learn interesting facts about animals while you participate in fun, hands-on projects that will benefit homeless pets, primates and more. The class is Aug. 12 from noon to 3 p.m. The cost is $25.

It’s Cookie Time! (age 7 and older): Learn how to make, cut out, bake and decorate homemade sugar cookies. Bring your creative ideas, nimble fingers and favorite cookie cutter. Students will leave with a dozen decorated cookies to share with friends and family. The class is Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35.

Creative Dramatics (age 5-8): Can you act like a bear? Can you fly like a bird? Creative Dramatics is an exciting class where you can “act up!” Students will enjoy yoga poses, puppets, storytelling and pantomime. The class is Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $29.

Act Out! (age 9-12): Act Out! is a fun-filled exploration of the theater arts. Students will journey through storytelling, improvisation, creative dramatics and much more. The class is Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $29.
