It was an ancient message, 2,000 years old, made fresh with current insights, humor and 21st century music.

On Jan. 25, the First United Methodist Church in Gatesville featured the inspirational duo of Jonathan Cring and Janet Clazzy, known as “Spirited,” performing their 50-minute show “567: Go Tell It From the Mount.”

The title refers to Matthew 5, 6 and 7, and Cring and Clazzy adapted the myriad of topics covered in those Bible verses by means of continuously evolving stories, songs, instrumental interludes and humor. Cring plays an electric keyboard and sings while Clazzy doubles on oboe and the Yamaha WX5 wind machine, an electronic amplified hybrid that resembles a soprano saxophone and produces samples of more than 250 instruments.

The Rev. Gene Gurley described the concert as part of a “mini-revival.” “Tonight we’ll hear one of the most important sermon’s of Christ’s ministry,” Gurley said. “If people hear it in a different way and it helps their understanding, that’s good.”

Gay Sadler, a member of the congregation, said she’d been looking forward to seeing Cring and Clazzy. “The buzz has been so infectious,” Sadler said.

Linda Klontz echoed those comments. “These special programs are always great,” she added.
