This weekend, appreciate local culture at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.

The city’s fifth annual Take 190 West — Killeen Salutes the Arts festival is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The free event is open to the public.

The festival features an array of artists — painters, sculptors, writers — displaying their work and performing their talents live. There will be book signings, a sculpting contest, pottery demonstrations and story times. Works by Killeen Independent School District students also are on display.

Painter Torrie Rebuck will display her paintings with African-American, jazz and military themes. Her prized piece is “A Cry for a Fallen Soldier,” inspired by a military friend she lost more than 15 years ago.

“Because of him, I always try to keep a positive attitude and live life to the fullest and always appreciate my family and friends,” Rebuck said. “It is my goal to reach everyone who is serving or who has served in the military ... and their families.”

The piece garnered an overwhelming response from soldiers, who often share their personal stories with Rebuck once they’ve viewed her work, she said. Poster-sized prints of the painting will be available for sale.

“It’s as though I started a chapter and every soldier I meet is telling a new chapter by keeping their spirits alive with us,” Rebuck said of people’s stories of those who served and how they changed their lives. “In my eyes, the military is tied to everyone.”

The city expects more than 3,000 people to attend Saturday.
