CTC speech team competes at state

The Central Texas College Forensics (speech) Team recently participated in the Fall Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association Tournament hosted by Howard Payne University in Brownwood. CTC competed against more than 80 individuals from 16 other teams including the nationally-ranked University of Texas-Austin and Texas State University in San Marcos.

Patrick Gonzalez, CTC team captain, was a semi-finalist in Impromptu Speaking and finished as one of the top 12 speakers in state. Gonzalez also placed sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking. Freshman Katherine Hlavaty captured second place in the statewide novice division of Programmed Oral Interpretation. Also representing CTC was Brandy Alexander.

CTC will now compete in spring tournaments including the Texas Community College Forensics Association Speech and Debate Tournament and the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.

CTC recognizes employees’ service

Central Texas College on Monday honored employees who reached at least 10 years of service this year. Seventy-seven employees with a combined 1,115 years of service were recognized.

Florence High School students participate in FFA Trade Show

As every year since 1998, the last day of school before Thanksgiving, Florence High School held its annual FFA Trade Show.

The agriculture speech and communications class of Melissa Loerwald wrote letters and made phone calls to companies to get their support for the annual project.

The students spend a lot of time preparing and learning about each of the products they choose to display, including arranging a stand to present those items.

The show was open to the public and lots of students, parents and community members came to view the displays.
