Baylor picnic set for Aug. 15; reservations due by Friday
The Annual Baylor Student Send-off Picnic will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at Cathedral Oaks Event Center, 1312 Waco Road, Belton.
This event is sponsored each year by the Central Texas Baylor Alumni and the Parents League of Baylor University.
All incoming freshmen, transfers, current students and their parents are invited. Their tickets are paid for by the Parents League, but reservations must be made by Friday.
All Baylor fans, whether alumni or not, are invited.
The guest speaker will be John Morris, “Voice of the Baylor Bears.” Having completed his 27th season overall broadcasting Baylor Bear Football, the 2013-2014 school year will be the 19th in his role as the signature voice of Baylor Athletics. Officially, he is Baylor’s assistant athletic director for broadcasting following in the footsteps of legendary Baylor announcer Frank Fallon. The 53-year-old Morris worked alongside Fallon for eight years on the Baylor football broadcasts (1987-1995) and his duties now include play-by-play for Baylor football and men’s basketball in addition to daily Baylor and Big 12 programming and the daily “John Morris Show” on ESPN radio in Waco. Broadcasting many other Baylor sports events, he also co-hosts the award winning weekly TV show, “Inside Baylor Sports.”
Morris graduated from Baylor in 1980, worked 15 years as TV sports anchor and Sports Director on KWTX-TV before moving to the Baylor post.
A native of Louisville, Ky., Morris graduated with honors from Danville High School. A proud father of three, he is married to the former Terri Melton, 1985 Baylor graduate. They are parents of Meagan, 24, Baylor grad; Maddie, 19, Baylor freshman; and M. J., 16.

All tickets for alumni and Baylor fans are $35 each, but all incoming students, current students and their parents are free. The reservation deadline is Friday.
CenturyLink employees make donation to Killeen food center
CenturyLink, Inc. employees in the Killeen-Fort Hood area collected the equivalent of 25,486 pounds of food in the 2013 CenturyLink Food Drive, which took place last month. The company held similar food drives in hundreds of company locations across the country.
Food banks can purchase food at a lower cost per pound than the average person could at a store, estimated on average to be six pounds of food per dollar given. Based on this calculation, CenturyLink employees, combined with the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation donated more than 25,0000 pounds of food to the Killeen Food Care Center.
A check, representing donations from local employees combined with the foundation match, was presented.
“We are excited to see the results of this year’s food drive reflecting the outstanding effort of our employees to improve the quality of life in our communities,” said Steve Hanik, CenturyLink’s Market Development Manager. “The Killeen Food Care Center does excellent work in addressing the very real issue of hunger in our community and CenturyLink is grateful to help them in this task. We hope that our annual drive not only provides needed food and donations, but also raises awareness of this issue here in the Killeen-Fort Hood area.”
