Belton High students honored at FFA state convention

BELTON — Several Belton High School students were honored recently at the Texas FFA State Convention in Dallas.

Kyler Tormey received an $18,000 college scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Tormey will attend Texas A&M in the fall where she plans to study biomedical science.

Teachers Wade Gartman, Tammy Gebert and Brad Hobbs serve as advisers for the Belton FFA Chapter. According to Gebert, this is the first time that a Belton student has received one of these scholarships.

Students Tristan Beal, Whitney Bushing, Emily Firebaugh, Ashley Myers, Callee Riehl, Ben Simpson, Evan Smith, Johnathan Templeton and Ashley Winkler received Lone Star Degrees during the convention. It is “the highest degree of membership the State FFA Association can award.” Members receiving the degree have shown a commitment to FFA and progress in their agricultural studies.

“I’m proud of these students and what they’ve accomplished,” said Susan Kincannon, Belton ISD superintendent. “Through their participation in FFA, they have demonstrated leadership while gaining both agricultural experience and life skills.”

FFA is one component of Belton ISD’s career and technical education program in agricultural science, which is much broader than farming and ranching. Some of the courses offered include animal science; welding; wildlife and recreation management; landscaping; and floral design and interior landscape development.

Career and Technical Education Director Lori Rockwood added, “Through our career and technical education programs students are discovering their interests and abilities. They are also gaining valuable skills that can lead to a post-secondary education and/or licensing and certification.”

Belton ISD offers courses in 15 of the 16 career and technical education clusters identified by the Texas Education Agency.
