Variety Peaceable Kingdom Retreat is opening its 120 acres to the public for the first-ever Kites for Kids day.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, people can take part in a kite-flying contest, parachute games, a low rope course, miniature golf course, a historic log cabin, arts and crafts, hiking, arcade games, air hockey, theater in the woods featuring “Monsters, Inc.” and refreshments. Everything is free and any donations will benefit Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children.

Ericka Mitchell, development coordinator, said residents should check in at the welcome lodge before exploring the many family-friendly activities offered at the 120-acre retreat.

“For so long, our program catered to children with special needs,” she said. While the retreat didn’t have the capacity to open its doors to the general public, a recent increase in staff and resources have allowed it to share everything it offers with the community.

“We’re this little hidden jewel,” she said. “If this (event) goes well and we see a good response to that, we’ll start doing more of that and open the door to the community.”
