SALADO — A few hundred people gathered around clouds of mouth-watering smoke to sample the grilled creations made especially for the Salado Eggfest on March 16 at Pace Park.
Unlike many egg-themed events this time of year that often include Easter bunnies and candy-filled plastic eggs, these self-described eggheads celebrate the craft of grilling on a big, green ceramic smoker shaped like an egg.
Some come to show off their creations such as Frisco resident J.D. McCall’s coffee-rubbed pork tenderloin with raspberry jalapeño glaze, while others come to taste and get ideas, including Glen Pelzel and his wife, Sandy Pelzel, of Muenster.
At Eggfest, in its third year in Salado, there are no awards or recognition; grilling enthusiasts simply come for the enjoyment and fellowship.
Several learned about the egg grill through a friend, such as David Ralls of Carmel, Ind. He heard about the versatility of cooking with the grill and had to try it for himself.
“I’ve cooked everything from pizza to bread to eggs,” Ralls said. “I don’t think there’s anything I haven’t tried.”
