Families can enjoy the fresh summer air while watching a movie or listening to a concert this summer during a series hosted by Killeen’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The Hot Summer Nights concert series kicks off at 8 tonight at the Killeen Amphitheater with The Space Rockers, an Austin-based cover band that plays hits from the ’80s.

The Movies in the Park film series kicks off at dusk June 7 at the amphitheater with “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.”

Due to a greater interest in movies, Brett Williams, director of parks and recreation, said this year’s series will feature three concerts and five movies on Fridays until July 26.

“It’s a venue where you can bring your lawn chair and bring in your family for the evening,” Williams said.

The city’s goal for the event is to provide an evening of relaxation and free family entertainment. In the past, anywhere from 100 to 400 people attended the concerts, while movies reached an attendance of about 500 people, Williams said. “People kind of wander in. ... It’s laid back.”
