Cove holds annual Krist Kindl Markt

Hundreds of people flocked to downtown Copperas Cove during the annual Krist Kindl Markt on Saturday, Dec. 1.

COPPERAS COVE — It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas with colder temperatures, and that makes perfect weather for Copperas Cove’s Krist Kindl Markt. For many, the holiday season does not start until they attend the three-day festival that opens today and ends Sunday.

A Cove tradition since 1994, the Krist Kindl Markt is a popular holiday venue that offers residents a festival to kick off the holiday season including a carnival with more than a dozen rides and games, food and item vendors, and live entertainment all weekend.

Resident Jody Schmidt chaired the chamber-sponsored event for three years and volunteered on the committee for eight years and has watched it grow.

“There is great food and very nice gifts you can purchase — not typical things you would find in a regular store but things that are original,” Schmidt said. “You can even get things personalized while you wait.”

Liz Sherman, the chamber’s tourism director, said that there are more than 80 vendors of which 12 are food.

“It will be like a tour around the world. Our vendors are offering food from several countries including Germany with pork schnitzel and bratwurst, Mexico with fajitas and burritos and Cajun food with alligator sausage, gumbo, boudain and crawfish.”

Sherman said most of the vendors are traveling from outside the area from as far away as Santa Fe, N.M. Unique items including jewelry, woodwork and German Christmas decorations will be available for purchase.

Schmidt and Sherman said the Krist Kindl Markt is a family-oriented event and is a great outing for all ages.

“From Dad all the way down to the kids, everyone can find something to do at the Krist Kindl Markt,” Schmidt said.
