Men, women and children of all ages are invited to a Bokwa and Zumba Fitness Social and Cocktail from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Killeen Community Center.

The free event combines fitness and wellness with entertainment, said Yira Barron, instructor.

“It’s a place for people to just relax and feel stress free and release all of the tension they feel throughout the week,” she said. “So it’s kind of like a little getaway.”

Guests will be treated to low-calorie refreshments and will have several opportunities to win door prizes, Barron said.

“We’ll have non-alcoholic cocktails, vegetables, snacks and little cupcakes that are made healthier than regular ones.”

Barron and instructor Pennie Bush will lead workouts, which will include Zumba but mainly focus on Bokwa.

They are two of the few instructors in Killeen who are certified in Bokwa fitness, Barron said.

“We came together and decided we needed to do something to promote it in the community because not a lot of people know about Bokwa.”

The new fitness program involves cardio dance and is similar to Zumba. With Bokwa, however, the steps are learned by letters and numbers on the floor rather than just choreography.

“It’s easy for those people that say, ‘I can’t dance, I don’t have any rhythm,’ and have trouble picking up the steps,” Barron said. “You just learn the steps and go with it and you can also incorporate your little flavor, which people seem to like.”

A group of instructors, who are sponsoring the event, will be in the crowd to assist guests during the workout. “Everyone is welcome as long as they’re willing and able to dance and have fun,” Barron said.

The Killeen Community Center is at 2201 E. Veterans Memorial Blvd. For more information, call Barron at (254) 813-5972.
