Several public events are planned this weekend to commemorate Memorial Day, including:
Members from Big Hoss BBQ meet annually to place flags on veterans’ graves in honor of Memorial Day at the Killeen City Cemetery. The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery’s pavilion. Volunteers are welcome. Community service hours provided and refreshments served.
Harker Heights kicks things off with the 8 a.m. Muscular Dystrophy Association 5k Run/Walk at Community Park, 1501 E. Farm-to-Market 2410. Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. Entry fees are $20 today or $25 Saturday.
The Memorial Day parade will start at 9:30 a.m., traveling along FM 2410 from Harker Heights High School to City Hall.
Brig. Gen. Clark W. LeMasters Jr., commander of the 13th Sustainment Command, and Mayor Mike Aycock will speak at the 10:30 a.m. Memorial Ceremony at Veterans Monument in front of City Hall, 305 Miller’s Crossing.
The 15th annual MDA Pat Patton Fish Fry will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Carl Levin Park, 400 Miller’s Crossing. Prices: $15 for all you can eat, $10 for adults one time through and $5 for children one time through.
VFW Post 9192 will host a wreath-laying ceremony for Ted C. Connell at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Killeen Memorial Cemetery on Lake Road. Connell was the commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States during 1960-1961. He was the second-youngest member and the first Texan to serve in the position.
A Memorial Day ceremony honoring Killeen veterans who died serving their country begins at 3 p.m. Sunday in Conder Park, near the flagpole, Killeen. The American Legion War Monument reflects the names of Killeen veterans who died in World War I (14); World War II (20); Korea (2); Vietnam (13): and Operation Enduring Freedom (5). Killeen Mayor Dan Corbin is scheduled to participate in the ceremony.
Sun City’s 10th annual Memorial Day Ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Georgetown-Williamson County Veterans Memorial Plaza, 2 Texas Drive to honor soldiers, veterans and those who served our country on Memorial Day. U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III, Georgetown Mayor George Carver, Williamson County Judge Dan Gattis and Central Texas veterans and their families will be in attendance.
The Memorial Day service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery is at 10 a.m. Monday. The cemetery is at 11463 State Highway 195, south of Killeen. Maj. Gen. Anthony Ierardi, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division, is the guest speaker.
Lt. Col. Robert Rodriguez is the guest speaker for VFW Post 3892 Memorial Day ceremony at 4 p.m. Monday, 201 VFW Drive in Harker Heights.
The Salado Cemetery Association will host the annual Memorial Day Service at 9:30 a.m. at the Historic Salado Cemetery on Baines Street. All 416 veterans buried in the cemetery will have flags placed on their graves.
