Miss Mary Hardin-Baylor will be selected Saturday.

The pageant is student-led, from directing to choreography, PR and graphic design. Directed this year by Ashton Ellegood and assistant directors Rylee Heckathorne and Melanie Gatlin, the annual pageant began in the 1950s as the Miss Bluebonnet Pageant.

The pageant offers a scholarship opportunity for participants, and is focused on developing leadership skills, responsibility and confidence.

“It gives a great cross-reference of our university,” said Jeff Sutton, assistant director of campus activities. “It’s a true representation of our student body.”

The pageant is a two-day affair. Events begin at 7 p.m. today with the contestants’ talent showcase. Prior to the showcase, the judging panel interviews each contestant.

On Saturday, the contestants will participate in an evening performance involving an opening number, evening gown walk, stroll, top-10 talent showcase, top-five interviews and, finally, the crowning of Miss Mary Hardin-Baylor 2014.

“They’re looking for the most genuine individual,” Sutton said. “They’re looking for someone passionate about the school.”

This year’s pageant has 24 contestants: Miss Freshman Class, Grace Adams; Miss Beall Hall, Luisa Aldana; Miss Burt Hall, Call Baucom; Miss Baptist Student Ministry, Naomi Flores; Miss Gettys Hall, Andi Hale; Miss Student Foundation, Hallie Holden; Miss Gamma Beta Phi, Kim Jones; Miss Remschel Hall, Brittany Kacal; Miss Johnson Hall, Allison Kelley; Miss Cru for Life, Kelsey Kunk; Miss Stribling Hall, Britni Marburger; Miss Senior Class, Alyssa Martinez; Miss Student Government Association, Lauren Matt; Miss Campus Activities Board, Elizabeth McNutt; Miss University Singers, Linny Mitchell; Miss Independence Village, Sarah Payne; Miss McLane Hall, Ali Pittman; Miss Freedom Movement, Lauren Ribera; Miss Farris Hall, Awna Shiflett; Miss Eta Beta Rho, Sarah Stadler; Miss Search Cru, Emily Steele; Miss Nursing Student Association, Kelsie Stuart; Miss Phi Mu Alpha, Stacy Syring; and Miss Junior Class, Kayla Upshaw.
