HARKER HEIGHTS — Even though it’s been nearly two months since the West Fertilizer Co. plant explosion, residents still have those affected by the disaster on their minds.

“It happened a while ago, but people are still getting together,” said Cari Holland, of Fort Hood, Saturday during a Battle of the Bands fundraiser for West. “It’s great.”

Fort Hood Harley-Davidson in Harker Heights partnered with H-E-B in Harker Heights, Meyer’s Sausage Co., and Coca-Cola to host the event.

They raised more than $1,900, which will be donated to victims of the explosion.

Residents can still help by dropping off donations from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the motorcycle shop, 875 W. Central Texas Expressway. Donations will be accepted through Friday.

“Even though the explosion didn’t really affect us here, (we realized) we have neighbors 70 or 80 miles down the road that are hurting and need help,” said Lowell Doublin, general manager of Fort Hood Harley-Davidson. “I’m not one to sit back and wait for the government to do something.”

Brenda Johnson, manager for the H-E-B in Harker Heights, has only been in the region for six months and said she hopes to participate in more community fundraisers.

“That is a very small town, and it was pretty devastating to them,” Johnson said. “We had over 45 partners for H-E-B who either lived there or their family lived there. ... It kind of made it more personal, even though I don’t even know those people.”

Holland said helping West is the neighborly thing to do.

“Everybody needs help sometimes and people that are a little more blessed should put themselves out there to help others,” Holland said.
