Live jazz and poetry will share the stage at The Crescent Lounge on Sunday with Killeen-based Dr. Gleam kicking off the evening with jazz, pop tunes, Latin and funk.

Dr. Gleam’s musicians have performed at the lounge in different configurations since the nightspot opened more than two years ago.

“We’ve played on this bandstand in big bands, with singers and various smaller groups,” said Ed Hernandez, Harker Heights percussionist and trumpet player. “It’s always a good time and we feel at home here.”

“Live music is one of the hallmarks of The Crescent,” said owner Anthony Rodriguez. “We think it sets us apart from other clubs and one of our goals from the beginning is to nurture the local music scene.”

To help keep the public motivated, Sunday’s event has no cover charge and no drink minimum.

Though the club boasts a wooden dance floor, many in the audience usually choose to listen, said pianist Les Young, who travels from Austin to handle the keyboard chores with the band. “There are regular fans who are really good dancers, as well as avid jazz fans who know the music and love to hear us stretch out and perform the classics.”

Dr. Gleam’s repertoire includes tunes by Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington and Freddie Hubbard, Hernandez said.

“We play songs by Chicago, Henry Mancini and lots of standard, classic American songbook selections.”

The Crescent Lounge has spotlighted local talent in a series of Sunday jazz jam sessions over the last two months. “We’ll be having more jams,” Rodriguez said. “It’s really a great way to give some up-and-comers audience exposure and everybody has a lot of fun.”

Sunday’s menu of events begins with Dr. Gleam from 6 to 8 p.m. Poetry Night starts at 9 with readings from the stage and audience participation.
