HARKER HEIGHTS — The In the Line of Duty Benefit Concert for the families of fallen Killeen police Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie and wounded officer Odis Denton is Saturday at the Harker Heights E Center, 710 Edwards Drive.

The concert starts at 5:30 p.m. and features the bands Silvergun, Black Water and ILL Caretta.

Dinwiddie, an 18-year veteran of the Killeen Police Department, was fatally wounded while he and other members of the SWAT team served a narcotics search warrant May 9. Denton, an eight-year SWAT team member who was shot in the leg, was one of four officers in the department’s Tactical Response Unit involved in the deadly shooting.

“Workers comp covers the officer being out of work, but the officer’s spouse has to be out of work to care for them, so this is our way to help the families supplement their income,” said Officer John Ivy, of the Gatesville Police Department and a member of the Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.

The concert is hosted by the club’s Central Texas Chapter, and all proceeds will go to the families of these officers. The club includes members from every facet of law enforcement.

Ivy is surprised and appreciative of the growing support and expects a huge crowd.

“The way this thing is taking off it is absolutely beautiful, so we could have a full house,” he said. “It shows our brothers and sisters in blue that they and their families are not alone.”

For Royal Schlitt, drummer for ILL Caretta and a Harker Heights resident, the concert has a personal meaning since one of his friends is on the Killeen police force.

“I really look up to him because of the job he and all the officers do,” Schlitt said. “When these tragedies happen, the community needs to assist their families, and this is our band’s way of helping out,” he said.

Tickets are $15 at the E Center in advance or at the door. Call 254-216-9618.
