A Killeen man will compete on a new reality show this week on CMT.

“Tattoo Titans” pits four tattoo artists from across the country for the “titan” title of each episode. But they don’t earn only bragging rights. Each week, the winner is awarded $10,000, said Caitlin Greenwell, CMT publicity assistant.

Dre Daugherty, of Killeen, will compete on the show’s third episode at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, featuring a patriotic theme. Each artist will create designs that represent the spirit of America.

Competing was a surreal experience, Daugherty said.

“It was awesome ... to showcase myself and my talent on a national level,” he said. “I had a great time and gave 100 percent of myself.”

Daugherty felt his practice and hard work over the years finally paid off. He has been tattooing professionally since 2006, but art has been a part of his life since he was old enough to hold a pencil.

“(Tattooing) is just another tool to expand what I do,” he said.

Daugherty, who also draws and paints, works at Before Crayons Tattoo Studio in Killeen, a custom tattoo shop with an upscale feel.

“The experience is different than what people are used to. We establish a relationship and draw right on your skin. If these mirrors could talk, they’d have a lot of good stories,” he said.

For Daugherty, the best part of his job is getting paid to do what he loves.
