From abstract and animal paintings, landscapes to photos, the Azalee Marshall Cultural Activities Center in Temple will abound with the craftsmanship of local artists Saturday as the annual Barclay Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition kicks off its monthlong celebration of artistry.

All the displayed works, which will be available for viewing throughout the month of March, were created by Bell County residents, including some college and high school students who are competing for scholarship money.

Barclay Arts Council chairwoman Cheryl Reid said this year, 43 awards will be given out at 10 a.m. Saturday, preceding a reception and open house at 11 a.m., when attendees will have the opportunity to speak with artists about their work.

“Art is not just a pretty picture,” said Reid. “Art depicts culture and emotion. It brings communities together.”

For the Barclay competition, first, second and third place as well as best of show awards will be given in the categories of abstract, animal, portrait, still life, landscape, drawing, mixed media, photography and three-dimensional categories.

For the protegé exhibition, works from area art professors and teachers will be shown in the Saulsbury Gallery with a protegé. Work by those artists can be of any medium. Teachers will submit one piece and two to four for their protegé.

“Whether or not you like (art), you still have a reaction to it,” Reid said.

The gallery opening and reception are free and open to the public. Festivities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with the award ceremony. The reception will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cultural Activities Center.

The artwork will be on display at the CAC until 5 p.m. March 28.
