Victory in Jesus Apostolic Church ties its spiritual outreach with assisting the community through its annual Back 2 School Bash Saturday.

This year's event will be the church's third annual. In addition to the school supply giveaway, the church is adding a gospel talent show as another form of outreach.

Corene Gardner, a member of the church, said the event gives the church a means to inform the community that "the church is here to help and assist."

The church established the event to support the community and the children in the community by bringing everyone together, Geno Gardner said. "We want to help those unable to provide school supplies and (it gives us an opportunity) to fellowship together."

Geno said it's open to all students from pre-kindergarten to college.

The bash will have free games, food, music and plenty of school supplies for attendees.

"We've planned for the masses," Corene said.

Churchgoers have been collecting school supplies for the past month to make the event bigger than in years past. Corene said attendance averaged 100-150 for the first two events.

Following the games and school supply giveaway, the church will prepare for the talent show.

An idea conceived by church member Shaunese Falkner, the talent show will add something different to the event, while allowing the church to reach out to the community spiritually, Corene said.

The show will be judged by three church members.

Corene said there are choirs and praise teams already signed up to perform, and individuals can sign up the day of the show.

Musicians will be provided for contestants, but they can bring their own music or band.

The giveaway and games run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the talent show begins at 3 p.m.
