Fort Hood's 2011 joint Earth Fest and Month of the Military Child celebration will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the 79th Street Gate on post, offering educational and entertainment opportunities for children, families and soldiers. More than 50 different exhibits on recycling, renewable energy resources, endangered species, natural resources, water conservation and other environmental topics will be on display under a giant, circus-style tent.

Earth Fest will also include fuel-efficient vehicles, bounce houses, clowns, free food and beverages and live music. A Games 2U mobile game theater will be at the event featuring the latest Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii games on six high-definition televisions. Individuals can play the games for free starting at 4 p.m. Zoomagination will also do a special 5 p.m. show featuring a two-toed sloth, wallaby, bearded dragon, snake, parrot and creepy crawlies.

The rest of the evening will feature live entertainment by Pandemonium, the Shoemaker High School Band, plus the Central Texas Country Wild Horses Band at 5:30 p.m., following the national anthem at 5:30 p.m. and the KISS IT tribute band at 7:30 p.m.

The largest Earth Fest event in the Army is free and open to the public.

Past Earth Fests and Month of the Military Child celebrations have attracted up to 15,000 people each, according to information from Fort Hood.
