COPPERAS COVE - A local motorcycle club is lending a hand to the Fisher House at Fort Hood, just in time for the holidays.

The Frozen Fanny Run is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with registration starting at 10 a.m. The cost of registration is $10, with all proceeds going to the Fisher House. The ride is sponsored by the Brothers in Arms Motorcycle Club of Central Texas, based out of Killeen. This is the second consecutive year the club has staged the Frozen Fanny Run to benefit the Fisher House.

The ride begins at Dave's Sports Bar and Grill in Copperas Cove. Owner Dave McBride said the event is about supporting area troops who have returned from fighting wars abroad.

"We are doing this for the troops," said McBride. "I was born and raised here. I know soldiers fight to keep our freedom. That's why we do what we do with things like this."

"It doesn't matter whether they're a Marine, a soldier, a Navy sailor," he said. "They all fight for the same cause."

The Fisher House Foundation, a national organization, donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military installations, which allow military family members to be close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease or injury.

Isaac Howard, manager of the Fort Hood Fisher House at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, said community fundraisers like the bike ride are important to help the Fisher House remain operational.

"The Fort Hood Fisher House provides a home away from home for families during medical crisis," said Howard. "We don't receive any funding from the military. All our funding is donated."

"(The donations from Saturday's event) will help purchase things like food, cleaning services and more," he said.

Howard said all the donations from the motorcycle ride are kept local, and only will go to the Fisher House.

The ride takes riders through Killeen, Harker Heights and Copperas Cove, at five separate stops. McBride said at each of the five stops, participants will receive a playing card. At the end of the event, the participant with the best and worst poker hands will each get a prize. Participants also can sign up for a 50/50 raffle, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the winner and 50 percent going to the charity.

McBride also said participants don't have to be motorcycle riders or enthusiasts to join the event and show their support for the Fisher House. Raffle tickets can be purchased by anyone, and the event also will feature a silent auction with gifts and prizes from local businesses. The top prize in the raffle is a M1916 rifle, donated by members of the Brothers in Arms Motorcycle Club.

McBride said Austin band Prime Directive, a classic rock cover band, will perform live at the event as well. Sammy's Grill will be on hand selling hot wings, burgers and more to attendees.

The first 100 participants to register for the ride will receive a T-shirt.
