SALADO - A 5K Sprint for Education held at Thomas Arnold Elementary School next weekend will raise money for the Educational Sustainability Center of Salado.

The center is a cooperative effort between a number of school and community organizations whose vision is to promote and educate the public about social and environmental sustainability practices, according to race information. It also creates an outdoor classroom for students.

"We're in the beginning stages of developing a garden at the school," said Molly Matlock, who was involved with planning the 5K and the outdoor learning center being established. "We've written grants and tried to do fundraisers, but now is a tough time to try and get money for stuff like that."

The event will include a children's 1K Fun Run an hour after the 5K starts.

Participants can register online or at the event the day of the race.

"Registration online stops the night before, but they can pay by check or cash the day of," said Nicholas Pritchett, race director. "It is for people who like to run, but also for people who want to walk, enjoy a nice day and support a good cause."

Proceeds will go directly toward buying materials for a garden which will eventually supplement cafeteria food at the school, said Matlock.

The garden is in the second phase of a four-phase project to give children an opportunity to observe and enjoy nature. Other phases will include constructing a certified Monarch butterfly way station and relocating a recycling center.

"They just need to bring themselves and some good running or walking shoes," said Pritchett. "Salado is a really neat town, and the event is good for a family to do. It doesn't have to be an hour event, they can make a day of it."
