The Central Texas Sickle Cell Anemia Association hopes Sunday's telethon will turn things around.

The association will host its 27th annual Sickle Cell Anemia Telethon at two separate locations Sunday: the Fox 44 studio in Waco and the Plaza Hotel in Killeen.

Missing its goal by more than $23,000 at last year's telethon, Ruby Graham, the association's Killeen office manager, said the organization hopes to reach at least $20,000 to help maintain the organization.

"We weren't able to do those things. Last year was a bad year for everybody," she said. "(Donations) help with medical care, with bills for those who can't work because they're always sick, to buy information to counsel others on the disease."

The annual event raises money to serve those affected by the disease in an eight-county area.

Graham said several area motorcycle clubs will be on the streets near the hotel collecting donations.

"Our services include sickle cell anemia education awareness presentation programs, genetic counseling, medical referrals, financial assistance for purchasing medicine and medical equipment, rent and utility payments, and assisting with funeral expenses when 'sicklers' cannot purchase life insurance because of their illness," a release from the association states.

The telethon will be aired on KWKT-TV Fox 44 from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Performances by the Williams Brothers, Kirk Franklin, Mississippi Mass Choir and Charlie Daniels will be aired, in addition to local choirs and groups.

For more information or to volunteer, call the Killeen office at (254) 634-7600 or (254) 690-6060, and (254) 752-3441 for Waco.

Donations can be mailed to Sickle Cell, P.O. Box 1705, Killeen, TX 76540.
