The Central Texas College Continuing Education Department recently released its fall 2013 class schedule.
A variety of noncredit courses will be offered through December in subjects ranging from business and professional development, exercise, cooking, computer skills, personal enhancement and homemaking skills.
Also, new career development courses, online classes and new traditional courses will be offered.
Some of the classes starting this month are:
Basic Math Review: Need a review to improve your skills before taking the college placement exam? This class reacquaints you with whole numbers, fractions, proportions, percents, measurement, data analysis, statistics, real numbers, algebraic expressions and equations. It focuses on practical applications and examples. Students are required to purchase a six-week access to ALEKS ($32), an individual online math program. The class meets each Saturday, Sept. 14 to Oct. 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. The cost is $45.
Creative Photography: This new course will take your photography skills to the next level. Students will participate in fun group projects and field trips. Course topics include refraction patterns, painting with light, close ups of water droplets, cross polarization and more. Participants must have a basic knowledge of photography and understand how to use camera settings. Equipment needed includes a camera, tripod, remote release, external flash and polarizer (filter). The class meets each Monday, Sept. 16 to Oct. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $55.
Launching Your Own Business: In this hands-on, facilitated workshop, participants identify their concerns and fears of starting a new business and learn to move forward with a mindset of seizing the opportunity to create a new future for themselves as an entrepreneur. This program introduces entrepreneurship under current economic conditions and explains the entrepreneurial planning process by identifying potential business ideas and identifying the research needed to determine business viability. The class is Saturday, September 14 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The cost is $25.
Handmade Greeting Cards: This beginner class starts with the basics of card making and experiments with cutting, stamping, embossing, folding and embellishing techniques. Collaborate with the instructor for design tips and tricks to create customizable cards for any occasion. All materials are included to create four cards. The class is Thursday, September 19 from 6-8 p.m. The cost is $19.
Water Fitness Training: Develop strength and flexibility while improving posture and body awareness in this aquatic fitness course. Class combines Pilates and yoga movements modified for the water. Included are shallow water exercises, wall exercises and suspended flotation stretches. No swimming skills are necessary. The class meets every Saturday, Sept. 14 to Nov. 9, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $29.
Core Strength and Conditioning: Develop your body uniformly while toning muscles and gaining flexibility. This class is appropriate for intermediate to advanced fitness levels. You’ll work out using a mixture of light weight repetition, cardio and Pilates. The class is every Friday, Sept. 13 to Nov. 1, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The cost is $29.
Line Dancing: Learn basic line dance movements and dance floor etiquette followed by intermediate and high-energy advanced steps. Class consists of demonstration with music and step-by-step instruction. Students will get plenty of dance practice in order to master steps. The class meets Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 17-26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $25.
Salsa: Learn how to salsa. The beginning class focuses on basic steps, turns and combinations. The intermediate class improves skills by building on what students have already learned. The class is every Friday, Sept. 1 to Nov. 13. The beginning class is 6 to 7 p.m. and the intermediate class is 7 to 8 p.m. The cost for either class is $29.
Beginning Tennis: Learn the basic strokes and rules of tennis for the first 30 minutes of class and play for 45 minutes. Bring your own racket and wear athletic shoes and comfortable clothing. The class meets each Monday, Sept. 9 to Oct. 7, from 5:45 to 7 p.m. The cost is $35.
In addition, career development classes in project management, entrepreneurship and business plan development, certified nursing aide, child development associate, professional truck driving, photovoltaic and solar systems, residential interior design and more are also available. Classes for lifelong learners (age 50-plus) are offered along with a variety of classes for children.
