1983 Ellison grad completes doctorate

Debra Mae Sayler Powell, 1983 graduate of Ellison High School, completed her PhD defense on Aug. 17.

She received a Doctorate of Business Administration in Marketing from Argosy University.

Debra is currently teaching at Art Institute and for Howard Payne in New Braunfels.

She is the daughter of Eugene and Doris Mae Parmer Sayler, formerly of Nolanville.

She successfully defended her thesis on the same day as her daughter, Jordan Powell, celebrated her 12th birthday.

Central Texas College announces nursing DAISY faculty award winner

The Central Texas College Nursing Department recently announced the winner of its fourth annual DAISY Faculty Award.

The award is presented each year to a faculty member for their positive impact on students and is based on student nominations.

This year’s winner is Patricia Rylander, MSN, RN and professor in the associate degree nursing program.

A registered nurse for 30 years, Rylander has been an instructor at CTC for the past 11 years. She teaches mental health nursing classes for second and third semester students in the program. Her previous work experience includes psychology and an operating room nurse.

Rylander received a hand-carved Shona sculpture entitled “A Healer’s Touch,” created by the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe, Africa, based on their tradition of revering traditional healers.

Other CTC nursing faculty members receiving nominations for the DAISY award were Lisa Fox, Tiffany Marty, Tamara Parks, Susan Ramnarine-Singh, Gloria Smith, Pat Vasbinder and Delores Williams.

CTC is one of 17 colleges and universities participating in the award program established by the DAISY Foundation in collaboration with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

The DAISY Faculty Award was created to provide a national recognition program for colleges and schools of nursing to demonstrate appreciation to teachers for their commitment and inspirational influence on their students. It honors nurses whose expertise and excellence are demonstrated in their role as teachers of students studying nursing in colleges and nursing schools.
