Get your kites ready: The fifth annual Kites for Kids is 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Variety’s Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children in Killeen.

The free event at 19051 Farm-to-Market 2484 includes kite flying, barrel train rides, bounce houses, face painting, arts and crafts, movies and arcade games.

Variety’s Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children hosts the annual event as a thank you to the community. It is accessible to individuals of all abilities.

Visitors can bring coolers and blankets to the retreat, but pets and alcoholic beverages are not permitted.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. April 9.

The retreat empowers children with special needs throughout Central Texas, and is entirely supported by local money — without state or federal funding — to serve about 5,000 kids each year in Texas.
