Several Killeen Independent School District teachers will receive professional development grants that allow them to attend training, conferences and symposiums this summer and fall.

During its regular workshop on Tuesday, the Killeen ISD board of trustees accepted a check for $42,617.62 from Joyce Hodson, director of the Killeen Education Foundation.

The mission of the foundation, a nonprofit program of Killeen ISD, is to enhance the environment of education by providing scholarships for students, innovative programs for classrooms and professional development training for teachers and staff.

Hodson said the foundation received 21 applications, representing professional learning requests for 107 teachers.

“We are able to fund eight of those applications, representing 57 teachers,” she said.

Jerry Bark, chairman of the grant review committee, said there were many “worthy applications.”

“It was a difficult decision,” he said.

“We’re glad to provide the funding for our staff, and we can only do it because of the support of generous donors in the community.”

Teachers will learn whether or not they received a grant during a surprise “Grant Patrol” visit from the Killeen ISD Education Foundation on Friday.
