As the first day of spring approaches, Killeen officials are encouraging residents to get active by kicking off an initiative to encourage healthier lifestyles.

Charlotte Humphreys, Killeen’s downtown project manager, said residents are encouraged to meet at the Andy K. Wells Hike and Bike Trail, across from the Killeen Community Center, at 10 a.m. Thursday where they will walk one-third of a mile down the trail to Avenue G to kick off the city’s health initiative.

“The city of Killeen partnered with H-E-B and the Greater Killeen Free Clinic to form a walk club in a push to get people to live better and healthier lives,” she said.

Humphreys said the details of the walk club haven’t been ironed out, but the intention is for the group to meet two to three times a week at the hike and bike trail and Lions Club Park to walk.

Humphreys said Thursday’s event will highlight the hike and bike trail extension that connects the Killeen Community Center to downtown.

“It’s a great way to bring people into downtown as well,” she said. “The trail extension is part of the downtown streetscape project that just finished up, and a lot of people were very involved with the streetscaping part of the project but the trail extension was over-looked.”

Humphreys said walkers will get a treat at the end of the trail where they will see chalk drawings from students at West Ward Elementary School.

“The students are going to come out to the trail on (Wednesday) and chalk it up,” she said. “We are giving them free rein to ... depict what Killeen means to them. We wanted a way to include the community and get our young students involved. Our young students inspire us through their activities just to live a better life.”
