Trey Powell cuddles his 6-month-old daughters, Kylan, left, and Ashton, in their home Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, in Seattle. At 42, Powell is a new addition to the ranks of men who intentionally seek the role of single father. While some opt for adoption, others yearn to have children with genetic ties and are willing to invest $100,000 or more, using surrogate mothers.

This July photo provided by the family shows Simon Taylor and his son, Cal. The 50-year-old Briton had a son via a surrogate birth in Arkansas in 2012, and is now working on arrangements to have a second child. Taylor, a self-employed businessman, describes himself as an admirer of America who never would have considered any other venue for the process. In an email, Taylor said he had extensive discussions with family and friends about his decision, with the upshot being strong support once those close to him realized how serious he was.
