TEMPLE — Seven Baylor Scott & White Health hospitals were ranked among the best in Texas for 2014-2015 by U.S. News & World Report in the publication’s annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings.
The U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in its 25th year, recognizes hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients.
Two Baylor Scott & White Health hospitals were ranked in the top 10 in Texas. Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas was ranked No. 1 in the Dallas metro area and No. 2 in Texas. Scott & White Hospital in Temple was ranked No. 10 in Texas, moving up eight spots from the previous year.
“As a team, we are so pleased to receive this recognition,” said Cindy Culp, chief nursing officer for Scott & White Hospital. “To be recognized for outstanding performance reflects the talent, drive and innovation of our staff and our physicians.”
Scott & White was recognized as high performance in nine physician specialties — cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; nephrology; orthopedics; pulmonology; and urology. Last year, the hospital was recognized for six specialties.
Scott & White is constantly working on initiatives to improve patient outcomes, Culp said. There’s no one approach that’s been used to improve communication between staff and the patient, as well as their families.
Several processes were put in place to advance good results, including educational efforts, such as clinical simulation labs that enhance teamwork and care, Culp said.
Scott & White also ranked high in patient safety, demonstrating commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes.
For the 12 data-driven rankings, U.S. News started with virtually all nonfederal community hospitals in the United States of any size, a universe composed of 4,743 hospitals.
Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, which has been included in the U.S. News & World Report rankings for more than 20 years, was ranked nationally in 2014 for six medical specialties: gastroenterology and GI surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; pulmonology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; and orthopedics.
