Pecan field day explores growth, development, nutrition

The Bell County Pecan Growers Association is hosting a pecan field day Sept. 21 at Ken Gerstenberg Farm, at 888 Elmer King Road, No. 130 in Belton.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and is $10 per person. The program will start at 9:15 a.m.

Topics to be discussed are pecan growth and development, nutritional needs, and insect and disease control. There will be several varieties of pecan trees to evaluate at the Gerstenberg Farm.

Participants should bring lawn chairs and plan on a fair amount of walking. If pecans are ready to harvest, there will be a tree shaking demonstration. One CEU will be provided for pesticide applicators. The tour should conclude around 11 a.m.

The primary presenter for the program will be Dr. Monte Nesbitt, Extension pecan program specialist, College Station.

The Pecan Growers Association will host a Pecan Show in December. Entries will be due by Dec. 2 at the Bell or Williamson County Extension office.
