Laurie Shumard enjoys driving across the course and putting against the green year-round.

“When I was teaching I could only play in the summer months and every now and then I’d take a personal day and come play,” said Shumard, who retired two years ago. “It’s never the same game twice.”

Every Wednesday, Shumard joins about 40 paid members of the Killeen Ladies Golf Association for weekly meetings and games at Stonetree Golf Club.

“I’m very social and I have so many friends in this group,” said Shumard, vice president of the club.

She said they play tournaments and scrambles in three different leagues and play couples games twice a month. They also travel to courses across Central Texas, including Burnet, Georgetown, Marble Falls and Fredericksburg.

“We get to travel to other courses and play with other ladies from other groups,” said Joy Ellithorp, a past president of the association, which she said is at least 35 years old.

Ellithorp has been part of the ladies club since 1984 and enjoys laughing, playing and joking with the friends she’s made through the group.

“I haven’t always been active because I worked, but I’ve always been a member,” she said. “We have fun but, at the same time, we’re a little bit serious. Some more than others.”

Sylvia Van Doren joined the group in 1990 and said her favorite part of being in the club is the camaraderie and companionship of the other women.

“I like to play golf and I wanted to get with a ladies group and this is the one,” she said. “It’s great. Everybody has been super.”

Van Doren said she’s passionate about the sport and never gets tired despite playing multiple games a week on her own and with the club.

“You’re competing against yourself, not anybody else,” she said. “It’s how well you can do individually.”

Now that she’s older and can’t play basketball or volleyball like she used to, Shumard said golf fills her need for physical activity.

“It’s harder to play ... the sports that you played all through high school and college, but at least (with golf) I can still compete,” she said.
