At its monthly meeting this week, the local branch of the NAACP recognized the community members who helped the group hold a new generation housing workshop last month, designed to help locals become homeowners.

Carlyle Walton, the president and CEO of Metroplex Health System, and Mark Chockran, general manager of All-American Chevrolet, received plaques in appreciation of their generous donations to the group.

“Metroplex is happy to be supportive of this fabulous organization,” Walton said.

The event served as an example of community members and organizations coming together to support a cause, said Kathryn Bradley, NAACP housing committee chairperson. More than $2,400 was provided by donors for the event.

“Our branch didn’t have to spend a penny,” Bradley said.

Killeen Mayor Dan Corbin and Brenda Smith, first vice president of the local NAACP, received certificates of appreciation for their donations at the Nov. 18 meeting.

The group thanked William Browning, general manager of the Shilo Inn, for donating the meeting space.

Through the workshop, people were able to learn about the process of acquiring a home. Speakers included six area leaders in housing issues, including Jim Bob Mickler of the Texas Veterans Land Board.

“Next year, we hope it is even bigger and better,” Smith said.

Several businesses provided raffle prize donations for last month’s event, including area H-E-B and Walmart locations.

Those businesses, along with a number of individuals, were presented certificates of appreciation.
