Sylvia Gavin to speak Sunday  

The 10th Episcopal District Women’s Missionary Society Young Women’s Initiative Fresh Fire Celebration starts at 10 a.m. Sunday at Adams Chapel A.M.E., 125 E. Arlo Road, Harker Heights.

Sylvia Gavin is the guest speaker.  

A native of Albion, Mich., Gavin joined the military and was assigned to Fort Hood in 1984 and retired as a first sergeant with 22 years of service earning a Bronze Star.

She is now a personal financial readiness specialist for the Army Community Service at Fort Hood.  

In ministry, Gavin is a founding member of Greater Vision Community Church, and was named as the church historian. She is a member of the adult choir, member of the Hospitality ministry, taught children’s Bible study and mentored young ladies ages 13 to 17. 

She is married to Pastor Keith Gavin and they together have five children and one grandson.

Thank You Songfest begins today

The community is invited to a Thank You Songfest beginning at 6 p.m. today at Pershing Park Baptist Church, 1200 Old Farm-to-Market 440 in Killeen.

Fall Fest is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20. There will be fun, food, games and fellowship for all ages. Ticket prices are one for 50 cents and 12 for $5. The public is invited.

Society to hold ‘red shoes’ celebration

Anderson Chapel A.M.E. Church Women’s Missionary Society will hold a “red shoes” Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. worship celebration on Sunday at 1002 Jefferis Ave. in Killeen.

The purpose of the “red shoes” is to recognize national sickle cell anemia month. The Rev. Dr. William M. Campbell Jr. is the senior pastor. Cathy Wilson is the local Women’s Missionary Society president.

The Rev. Catline Swift, retired pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, will be the guest preacher.

Swift is a retired itinerant elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She is a graduate of Crawford High School and McClennan Community College in Waco.

She is known for her love of gospel music. She has appeared with gospel artists such as Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood and Albertina Walker and groups such as The Jackson Southernaires, The Williams Brothers and the Paul Quinn College Choir. She has been in the Christian ministry since 1979 and received her first pastoral charge in 1988 to St. James A.M.E. Church in Calvert. The Rev. Gene Carter, executive director of the Central Texas Sickle Cell Anemia Association, also will join the observance.

The church, which donates annually to the association, will receive a freewill offering whose proceeds will benefit the association.

Community Baptist invites public to sing

There will be an old time gospel singing at Community Baptist Church at 1:15 p.m. Sunday.

Lunch, prepared by the ladies, will be served after the 11 a.m. worship service.

The community is invited to attend, bring their musical instrument and talent of singing, and join in the fun and celebration of singing for the Lord.

The monthly citywide prayer for the unborn is from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hope Pregnancy Center.

Church to participate in National Night Out

St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church will participate in the annual National Night Out by holding a party in the church’s courtyard on Tuesday.

The public is invited. The first 100 attendees will receive goodie bags with some really cool stuff.

There will be free food and drinks, games for the entire family, live music, and visits from the Killeen Police and Fire departments. McGruff, the crime dog, also will make a showing.

Monthly prayer luncheon set Tuesday

The Killeen Christian Ministers Fellowship monthly prayer luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at East Side Baptist Church.

All pastors, ministers and chaplains in the greater Killeen and Fort Hood area are invited.

Senior pastors who are unable to attend are encouraged to send a representative.

A complimentary lunch will be provided.

The Killeen Christian Ministers Fellowship is an informal organization whose goal is to strengthen relationships among the spiritual leaders of the community.

There are no dues or fees, and membership is open to all pastors, ministers and chaplains in the local area. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month for fellowship and prayer.

Gospel artists to perform at Bible Way

The Divine Messengers will be celebrating 10 years of ministering to souls through music at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at Bible Way Missionary Baptist Church.

Dr. Patti Amsden’s seminars set Oct. 20

Dr. Patti Amsden, author of “Portals — Releasing the Power and Presence of God Into The Earth” will be at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center on Oct. 20.

Public invited to St. Joseph Fall Fest

St. Joseph Fall Fest of All is set for Oct. 21 on the church grounds at 2903 E. Rancier Ave. in Killeen.
