Jessie Ramthum shows one of the collected pennies that he finds interesting to Laura Winckel as the coins are counted Aug. 3 at Trinity Baptist Church in Harker Heights. The idea for a penny drive came from Larry Smith, owner of Mandatory Fun in Killeen, after he started hearing stories of residents in need from people who came by looking for work. His goal is to collect 1 million pennies, or $10,000, to benefit the needy in the Killeen area.
