Did you miss going to church last Sunday? Did you know last week was National Back to Church Sunday?

If you are like most people, Christian or not, you probably never heard of this particular Sunday and aren’t exactly sure what it is.

According to the “National Back to Church Sunday website, “this event began as a movement to invite everyone in America back to church by empowering and motivating church members to invite their family and friends to come with them to a special service hosted by the local church.”

In addition, I found this on their website — according to Dr. Thom Rainer, author of “The Unchurched Next Door”:

• 82 percent of the unchurched are at least somewhat likely to attend church if invited.

• Yet only 2 percent of Christians ever invite someone to church.

Very interesting and revealing statistics, don’t you think?

While I applaud the “Back to Church Sunday” movement and its attempt to generate interest among Christians to invite family and friends to their local church, I think EVERY Sunday is Back to Church Sunday.

The “Church” is not the “building”; it is the “bodies” who meet together to worship the risen Lord. “Do you not know that your body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit?” 1 Corinthians 6:19.

So why should we meet together as the church?

• To worship and enjoy fellowship with the Lord and fellow believers — there are no “lone rangers” in the Kingdom of God.

• To be prayed for, be forgiven and healed — it is like a spiritual hospital.

• To hear the voice of God – through prayer, praise and proclamation of the word.

• To grow in your understanding of the Bible — to feed your soul.

• To love and be loved.

• To encourage and be encouraged.

And what does the Bible have to say about the subject?

• “Forsake not the assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another.” Hebrews 10:25

• “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18:20

• “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17

• “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account.” Hebrews 13:17

• “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” Acts 2:42

So, did you miss going to church last Sunday?

No problem — consider this your invitation.

Every Sunday is Back to Church Sunday!

See you Sunday!
