A local ministry will fill its campuses with the sounds of music, Christmas joy and laughter this weekend as it tells the Christmas story from the perspective of playwright and humorist Martha Bolton.
The musical Christmas drama “Bethlehem’s Big Night” was presented at Hillside Ministries in Killeen on Friday night and will be presented at Copperas Cove’s Hillside Ministries, 2602 S. Farm-to-Market 116, at 7 p.m. today and again at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.
Admission is free and open to the public.
The 45-minute show brings the Christmas story to life through drama, comedy and music by Bill Wolaver.
“It’ll make you laugh,” said Claudia Daniels, director of the Cove play. “The music is very enjoyable, and it’s well-written.”
Daniels said the main characters are two innkeepers who are business rivals. One owns the Bethlehem Inn and the other, the Six Shekeled Motel. Daniels said there is a great part in the musical where the innkeepers sing a duet, “You’re Welcome,” vying for another character’s patronage.
The play, while about the nativity, has an obvious story-within-a-story line, she said.
“You’re getting the traditional Christmas message in a nontraditional way,” Daniels said.
The 20 cast members are all affiliated with Hillside Ministries and have put in many hours of work, rehearsing at least once a week since October.
“These are people from all the congregations,” said Pastor Angel Valencia, Killeen campus. “It’s just an opportunity for the people to get together for fellowship and be encouraged.”
