The Rev. Ray Allen Zischang is celebrating 20 years serving as pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Killeen.

The church’s congregation honored “Pastor Ray,” as he is affectionately known, with a reception at the church last weekend.

Zischang came to Immanuel Lutheran on Dec. 1, 1993. He is a native of Houston and a 1970 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. He received a master’s of divinity degree from Christ Seminary-Seminex in 1974 and was ordained in Irving on Sept. 8, 1974.

Having served as pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Irving and First Lutheran Church in Hobart, Okla., Zischang also has experience working with Community Health Planning, Home Hospice and the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. In addition to being pastor of Immanuel Lutheran, he serves as PRN chaplain at Scott & White Hospice. Zischang and his wife, Laura, have three children.

Zischang said highlights of the past 20 years include supervising 15 seminary student interns who were assigned to Immanuel, baptizing 250 people, conducting 189 funerals and marrying 93 couples.

Zischang has served on the Families In Crisis board of directors, the Clifton Sunset Ministries Nursing Home board, the Killeen Arts Commission and the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Candidacy Committee.

He conducts a group Bible study at the Rosewood nursing facility each Monday. The congregation is buying 10 acres of land at the northwest corner of Elms and Cunningham roads and is building a new facility at that location. Immanuel Lutheran Church is at 1104 N. Fourth St.
