MARINE CITY, Mich. — A Marine City church celebrated its final Christmas.

Next month, it will close for good.

Marine City United Methodist Church, which has been a presence in the area’s spiritual community for 162 years, will hold a final service Jan. 26, and the doors will be shut for good five days later.

“My parents were married here. I was married here. My son was married here,” Darlene Markel, a church member who lives in St. Clair County’s Cottrellville Township, told the Times Herald of Port Huron.

The church’s membership declined from a high of 650 to 700 in the 1950s to the current roster of 56.

“That’s total membership, including shut-ins and people who don’t live in the area but are still members,” said church member Harvey Finsterwald of Marine City.

The church doesn’t have a full-time minister.

The Rev. Carol Floyd, a retired Methodist minister, works 10 hours per week, split between Sundays and Tuesday mornings.

The first Methodist Episcopal Society in Marine City was organized in 1851. The current building was constructed in 1905.
