GeekFest

Patrick Thomas prepares to attack Belle de la Tours at GeekFest at Central Texas College, Aug. 13, 2016.

It’s time for Central Texas residents to get their “geek” on, and Central Texas College is preparing for a bigger turnout than ever before. With more than 1,500 wristbands sold last year, GeekFest staff are expecting to see that number of people or even more this year.

“With 21 classrooms holding different programs and events, we have over 400 hours of programs available this weekend,” CTC and GeekFest spokeswoman Barbara Merlo said. “We are open to any kind of geeky pursuit as long as it is appropriate.”

The event kicks off Friday and lasts from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Beginning Friday and lasting throughout the weekend, Quantum Leap Games & Hobbies will host video game console free play and board and card game demonstrations in rooms 113 and 114 in the Mayborn Science Theater.

Also Friday night, people will be able to start applying for Saturday’s Cosplay Contest, which will happen at 6 p.m. in the Mayborn Science Theater.

There will also be several introductory classes on a variety of subjects Friday, including Steampunk, Dragon Ball Z, toy making and painting, just to name a few.

One of the highlights of the evening will be the screening of “Star Wars: Rogue One” in the theater, allowing ticket-holders to watch the movie on a super-sized screen.

On Saturday, one of the bigger day-long events is the Dungeons & Dragons pick-up game that runs several play sessions throughout the day, allowing people to drop in and out at their leisure.

At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, event-goers can also meet with the Society of Creative Anachronism and find out how to get involved in medieval reenactment.

Various video game and card game tournaments will take place throughout the day on Saturday as well, and spectators are welcome if they choose not to enter themselves.

Saturday’s schedule ends with a showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the dome with O’Brien’s Orchestra performing a shadowcast play-along of the cult classic.

On Sunday, GeekFest will show episodes of “Doctor Who” all day in room 127 of the Mayborn Science Theater.

There will also be a special Harry Potter party in room 137 celebrating the 20th anniversary since the publication of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.”

This is just a small samplining of what is available this weekend at GeekFest. To find out more about what is offered at the event, visit www.geekfest.ctcd.edu/programs-and-panels/program-and-panel-preview.

“We try to hit every potential geeky area, because some people aren’t into video games and some people aren’t into anime,” Merlo said. “We feel like we have something for everyone.”
